Her Legacy Continues
In 2006, Debbie began to realize that there was a need for a dedicated place for the youth of the Bible Baptist Church in Thika to call their own. She gained permission from the church to utilize a corner of the property to build a youth building and began the process of raising the funds to put up the building. She was able to employ Joshua, a local builder, as the contractor for the project.
The work started with
a foundation which would support a stone building.
Then we had the floor slab poured.
Debbie, with Joshua’s
help, was then able to raise the walls for a 20 x 30-foot youth hall that would
be one large room or could be divided into 2 rooms.
But then some tough decisions had to be made. How would the building be used? Which were the most important steps to accomplish? Where could shortcuts be taken? Since the budget would not allow her to finish everything, she opted to make do with the money that she had been given, even if some things were left undone.
The outside work was deemed most important. Debbie, together with her dad, Robert, and her brother, Doug, stretched the budget as best they could. The inside was plastered, the floor leveled and smoothed, and security bars were installed to allow the building to open for use.
All of us were proud of the work Joshua and Debbie had done and excited to see the building begin to be used for the purpose for which it was intended.
Now, let us scroll ahead to 2018. We have a few problems. The building needs to be properly finished. Without proper windows, we are having a real problem with birds, bugs, and African dirt finding the four 8’ x 3’ openings and migrating into the building.
The room divider was
never put in as the budget ran dry.
Currently only one class can meet in the building at a time.
The paint is still
the drab undercoat that must be put on until the concrete walls completely dry
and we have never been able to go back and properly finish the painting. We also need teacher’s storage cabinets built
into each classroom to facilitate safe storage of classroom supplies. Window coverings are a real need to allow
night time use of the facility.
We need to do proper landscaping, sidewalks, handrails, security lighting, and a list of other finishing touches that Debbie had hoped to do. Her building today has become not only the youth hall, but is also the children’s Jr. Church hall, the Bible Institute classroom, and an adult literacy classroom. This is a busy building that has found multiple uses for our church.
Our Kenyan church,
Bible Baptist Church, has already contributed $50 in honor of Debbie to help
finish “Debbie’s Building”. Many others
have already given. The windows have
been ordered. The landscaping is being
planned. Would you be willing to help
the church, the friends of Debbie, and her family finish the project in a way
that would bring honor and glory unto the Lord and leave a legacy behind in Debbie’s
memory?
